Ungummed! Slightly thicker paper sheets work well for blotting away moisture from oboe and bassoon pads. It’s ungummed which is essential.

To prevent the gurgling that happens from moisture buildup, slide an edge of a single sheet under a wet pad and close the pad for a moment. Any moisture will transfer to the paper and away from the instrument pad.

Many players will place a portion of a dry sheet under the octave pads on oboes and English horns when they are put in the case. This is thought to protect those tiny, delicate pads from taking on too deep an impression from the underlying pad seat.
